Like many people who enjoy their favorite beverage on the go, I've got a thing for finding the best coffee mugs, travel cups, and tumblers that I can get my hands on. When you make a conscious effort to drink a lot of liquid throughout the day, these reusable cups can end up being an essential everyday item that you feel incomplete without. Indeed, my daily walks just aren't the same if I don't have my lemon water in hand. My goto for a few years now has been the Joco Classic 16 oz Cup, as it's been a reliable companion that simply does its job well and looks nice enough while doing it. I've never had any issues with it, and I didn't long for anything more.

So when I first laid eyes on the Stanley Quencher H2.0 Flowstate 40oz Tumbler, I was taken aback by its sheer size and brazen design choices. At first glance I quickly dismissed this cup as all hype and no substance. What a ridiculously oversized travel tumbler I thought. It did get me thinking, though. Is this cup's massive popularity unfounded and simply a result of clever influencer marketing, or are there tangible real world benefits that I just don't know about? Well, curiosity has gotten the best of me (again) and I had to find out for myself what it really offers.

Stanley has been making beverage containers since 1913 with the revolutionary invention of the all-steel vacuum bottle. The Stanley Quencher H2.0 Flowstate 40oz Tumbler that we're focusing on here was released all the way back in 2016, but only started to become a success around 2020. This is in part due to its popularity on social media and grassroots word of mouth recommendations from people who genuinely loved the product. For most of us though, the cup's popularity seemed to explode out of nowhere. Almost overnight they could be seen in the hands of nearly every fitness and wellness enthusiast in North America.

The Stanley Quencher H2.0 Flowstate 40oz Tumbler has a striking appearance that you'll immediately love or hate for its bold aesthetic. For a seemingly simple travel cup, there's actually a lot of engineering that went into its creation. The cup's most prominent feature is its tapered base which allows you to fit this large tumbler into your car cupholder. In all honesty, it's a brilliant design choice. The cup sports a thick handle that balances well with the cup itself. It also feels great in the hand with a comfortable grip and a soft area for your thumb. The ergonomics here are perfect.

The Stanley Quencher H2.0 Flowstate 40oz Tumbler is made from high quality stainless steel, 90% of which is recycled. The cup is BPA-free, so you don't need to worry about it harming your health in the longterm. The feature I enjoyed the most is the cup's unique three position lid. You can configure it to your liking to have a straw opening, a drink spout only, or a closed position. You can do this by rotating the large dial on the top of the lid. It has a solid click in place feel when changing positions. This amounts to a nice to use industrial design with satisfying tactile feedback.

There's peace of mind to know that the straw is reusable, and the cup itself is easy to clean and maintain. It's even dishwasher safe. However, the biggest selling point about the Stanley Quencher H2.0 Flowstate 40oz Tumbler for most people is that it can hold a huge amount of liquid that will remain freezing cold or boiling hot for several hours on end. I've put this claim to the test and can confirm that it consistently performs this task with ease. This is incredibly valuable if you're out and about but don't have easy access to hot or cold water for a longer period of time. Lastly, Stanley offers a wide variety of customization of the cup to suit your personal style. There's an overwhelming amount of colors to choose from, and you can even add text, a monogram, a graphic, or upload your own image for a completely unique piece.

The most glaring omission on the Stanley Quencher H2.0 Flowstate 40oz Tumbler is that unfortunately it isn't leakproof. Stanley's competitors have come out with similar cups that are in fact leakproof, so this is somewhat disappointing. You'll want to be sure to keep the cup in an upright position or you may end up with a mess on your hands. While the cup's weight is negligible when its empty, it can be a bit unwieldy when filled with liquid and being handheld for long periods of time. If you need a cup for long walks or hiking, be sure to choose a smaller size because the 40 oz version will inevitably become a burden to carry.

Pros

  • BPA-free
  • Three position lid configuration is well implemented

  • Reliably keeps drinks hot or cold for several hours
  • Unisex design with plenty of customization options available

Cons

  • Not leakproof
  • Gets heavy fairly quickly when handheld with a full cup of liquid

After spending some quality time with the Stanley Quencher H2.0 Flowstate 40oz Tumbler, I'll be the first to admit that it has grown on me. It's a beast that has successfully bridged the gap from a purely practical and functional cup to a desirable fashion accessory. It can endure some abuse too, as I haven't babied mine and it still looks good after several months of use. More importantly, the cup really is an ideal solution for bringing to work, school, the gym, or if you're simply looking to drink more water throughout the day. With no shortage of limited editions, new color releases, and collaborations, the Stanley Quencher H2.0 Flowstate 40oz Tumbler's popularity won't be diminishing anytime soon. And it turns out that's for good reason.
